Self-employed

Health insurance for the self-employed in Georgia

If you work for yourself, the Marketplace is probably your market. The credit works, but it works on an estimate, so a few habits save money.

Last reviewed October 24, 2026

You are the typical enrollee

According to KFF, about half of adults with Marketplace coverage are self-employed or work for a business with fewer than 25 employees. The Marketplace was built for people without employer coverage, and the premium tax credit is the main reason it is affordable.

The credit is based on next year's income

When you apply for 2027 coverage, you estimate your 2027 household income. The credit is paid to the insurer in advance each month based on that estimate, then reconciled on your 2027 tax return. If you earned more than you estimated, you may owe some back; if you earned less, you get the difference as a refund. Because self-employment income moves, two habits matter:

  • Estimate honestly, using your most recent full year and what you know about next year.
  • Report changes during the year. If a big contract lands or ends, update your application within 30 days so the advance credit adjusts and you avoid a surprise at tax time.

What counts as income

Modified adjusted gross income for the household: net self-employment income (after business expenses), wages, interest, most retirement income, and the taxable part of Social Security. The self-employed health insurance deduction and half of self-employment tax reduce it. An agent can walk through it, and a tax professional can confirm it.

Thresholds that matter for 2027

  • Below 100% of the federal poverty level, adults in Georgia generally do not qualify for Marketplace credits; ask the agent about Georgia Pathways and other options.
  • Between 100% and 250%, silver plans come with lower deductibles and copays on top of the credit.
  • Above 400%, there is no credit in 2027. You can still buy a plan, and an agent can still compare every plan in your county.

One-person business, or employees?

If you have employees, a licensed agent can also explain individual coverage HRAs, where the business reimburses employees for individual plans instead of buying a group plan. That is a conversation for the agent, not this page.

Our three-step request asks for an income range, shows what public tables say about that range, and names the one licensed agency that will contact you. It never asks about your health.
